The shell stitch creates a beautiful fan or scallop shape by working multiple stitches into the same stitch or space. It produces a decorative, lacy fabric that is perfect for shawls, baby blankets, and elegant borders. One of the most popular decorative stitch patterns.

Step-by-Step Instructions

  1. 1

    Skip the specified number of stitches as directed by your pattern.

  2. 2

    Work 5 double crochets into the next stitch — all five go into the same stitch.

  3. 3

    The five stitches will fan out naturally, forming a shell shape.

  4. 4

    Skip the next specified number of stitches.

  5. 5

    Work a single crochet into the next stitch to anchor between shells.

  6. 6

    Repeat the shell and anchor pattern across the row.

  7. 7

    On the return row, work shells into the single crochet anchors and single crochets into the centre stitch of each shell below.
